Environmental review of port infrastructure and practices

Summary

Retained by the World Bank, EEM visited a number of ports in Cameroon, as well as some outlying ports, to review and report on channel dredging and spoil management programmes.

Approach and Solution

The mandate was to establish whether programmes were being executed according to established plans, to tour the vessels, harbours and facilities for dredging, to identify / confirm the environmental issues associated with dredging, to review the available data on environmental effects and to interview government bureaucrats. The primary objective was to synthesize and update data on Douala, in order to improve the basis for evaluating funding applications.

Results

Key environmental and organizational issues were identified from an independent, objective perspective.
