Paul MacLean, M.Sc., CEA, EMS (LA)

Paul is founder and president of ÉEM inc. Having 20 years of EHS management, compliance, system development and auditing experience, he is accountable to all ÉEM clients and for the activities of the firm, including daily input into thought leadership, oversight of business development, project execution and administration.

Paul is English, French and Spanish speaking and has worked in the US, Mexico, Venezuela, Iceland, Cameroon, Bermuda and Thailand. He is co-author of Good to Green: How to Manage Business Risks and Opportunities in the Age of Environmental Awareness (John Wiley & Sons, 2009) and Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems Auditing (LexisNexis Canada, 2002).  Paul has been on the editorial advisory board of Canadian Environmental Regulations and Compliance News since 1993 as well as the Environmental Compliance Insider.

In recent years, Paul and the ÉEM team have helped their clients to incorporate Sustainable Development principles into business processes and culture and to leverage their EHS management systems to this end.  

 

Stephanie Hamilton, ing., CEA

Vice-President, Sustainable Business, Stephanie joined ÉEM inc. in 1994, with university education received in England and professional experience acquired in England and France. Over her career with ÉEM, Stephanie has specialized in environmental management system implementation and now leads the way for clients interested in Sustainable Development.

She is currently guiding a large print and publishing firm with over 50 facilities on its Sustainable Development strategy and assisting with its first Sustainability report.  This builds on her experience gained improving the environmental management of the company at its operational level, as well as her work on crafting a paper procurement policy for the company.

In the past, working closely with the corporate office of a multinational firm in the aerospace sector, Stephanie played a focal role in supporting the successful implementation and ISO 14001 certification of a corporate EHS management system covering eight sites.

She is well-versed in the environmental legislative framework, having frequently conducted or overseen legislative compliance audits.  The valuable knowledge acquired from years of auditing is now being shared through NIMONIK, an environmental regulations database.  Stephanie led the four-person team and directed the initial software development during the 2-year design and build of this proprietary database application.  Now run as a separate business in partnership, NIMONIK guides ÉEM clients through the relevant environmental legal requirements.

Christian Matossian, M. Urb., PBAS, Cgeog

Vice-President of Social Performance and Stakeholder Engagement, Christian joined ÉEM inc. in 2006 to grow the sustainability strategy and stakeholder engagement arm of the consulting practice. He brings 10 years of international experience in social performance, community development, stakeholder engagement, and multi-sector partnership building from the energy, water, mining, transportation, and international development sectors.

Prior to joining ÉEM, Christian spent several years in London, UK as a corporate responsibility projects manager for Thames Water. He managed large water supply and sanitation infrastructure projects in developing countries, including undertaking stakeholder engagement and building multi-sector partnerships. Also in Europe, Christian spent two years as a projects manager in corporate environmental affairs with RWE AG. He managed renewable energy and carbon offset projects as well as environmental capacity building programmes. 

Mr. Matossian has a Master's in Urban Planning from McGill University and an Honours Baccalaureate in Geography from the University of Western Ontario. He is also a professional ‘partnership broker' accredited by the Overseas Development Institute and International Business Leaders' Forum, a Chartered Geographer with the Royal Geographic Society, and is highly trained in stakeholder engagement facilitation.

Christian is a member of the Canadian Hydropower Association’s Aboriginal Relations Working Group and sits on the Ordre des Urbanistes du Quebec’s Sustainable Development Committee.

Robert

Robert Cole, MBA  

Robert Cole joined ÉEM in 2006. He holds an MBA specialised in organisational change management. Prior to joining ÉEM he worked as a consultant for 3 years in the field of business strategy and performance measurement. In this role, he has worked with a number of clients in both the public and private sectors including the pharmaceutical, engineering and financial services industries helping them implement new strategic orientations that deliver measurable results.

At ÉEM, Robert has been working on the social performance and stakeholder engagement side of the business conducting community consultations and facilitating stakeholder advisory panels as well as developing social baseline assessments. In addition to working on social performance he has implemented ISO 14001 compliant management systems along with developing tools and methodologies to help our clients implement sustainable strategies.
Robert speaks English, French and Conversational Spanish and has travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Mélanie Rousseau, M.Sc. 

Melanie Rousseau is an EHS Management Consultant with six years of diverse experience, ranging from impact assessment, management system development and auditing, risk assessment and land use plan development.  She is known for her highly organized and clear style of project management.  She has developed considerable expertise in the Canadian environmental legislative framework, having been the coordinator of the NIMONIK legislative service at ÉEM for two years. She has experience of lean manufacturing techniques, as she has supported and coordinated the efforts of an ÉEM client to achieve recognition in its competitive excellence programme for over a year. She has worked with firms in the printing and publishing, energy, aviation, mining and plastic packaging sectors by:

·      Performing environmental and health & safety legislation reviews and registers;

·      Participating in legal compliance audits and internal audits;

·      Participating in the development of ISO 14001 environmental management systems;

·      Assisting firms with multiple sites to maintain EHS management systems to its own standards as well as to ISO 14001; and

·      Providing support to in-house environmental coordinator of a firm with multiple operating sites in North America.

Prior to joining ÉEM in 2005, Melanie worked on energy projects (wind, hydro and cogeneration) at a renewable energy firm, ensuring project compliance to both provincial and federal legislation.  During this time, she managed the permits and certificates of approvals required for each project.  She was also actively involved in the implementation of the environmental management system at a small hydroelectric plant in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ross Szwec

Ross brought experience in effluent control and environmental laboratory expertise to ÉEM in 2000, after serving four years as the environmental coordinator for an ISO 14001-registered base metal mining and processing facility in northern Quebec.  At ÉEM, he has implemented environmental management systems in the mining, automotive component, aluminum smelting, pulp and paper, aerospace, printing and textile sectors.                      

He has conducted more than 120 environmental management system and regulatory compliance audits in various industry sectors, has provided training and has assisted clients in the development of programs, registers, guidance documents and permitting requests to support them in meeting regulatory or other requirements.  He has also been involved with ÉEM’s First Nation clients, having conducted numerous Phase I environmental site assessments and contaminated site inventory, characterization, remediation and decommissioning projects in remote northern locales. 

Stuart 

 

Stuart Lister, M.A.

 
Stuart Lister joined EEM’s social performance practice in August 2008.  He brings to the EEM team over a decade of stakeholder engagement and sustainability communications experience in municipal politics in Ottawa and environmental consulting in Ottawa and Montreal.  He has worked with a wide range of clients in the mining, power, waste management and media sectors, as well as with First Nations.  


Stuart obtained his Honours B.A. in English and Mass Communication from McGill University in 1992, and his M.A. in Mass Communication from Carleton University’s School of Journalism in 1995.  He is fluently bilingual.

Stephanie Côté, M.Env., CEA, CESA

Stephanie Côté joined ÉEM in 2006. A certified environmental auditor (CEA) and certified environmental site assessor (CESA), Ms Côté has undertaken numerous ISO 14 001 environmental audits and phase I and II environmental site assessments in the past five years. She has worked on the implementation and monitoring of environmental management systems in more than 17 companies, including firms in the metallurgical, pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors. She has also developed environmental guidelines and overseen the development of implementation methods.

At ÉEM, Stéphanie is assisting the staff of a large manufacturing facility to overhaul their risk assessment methodology and to streamline their operational controls.
   

Erica Oberndorfer, M.Sc.

Erica Oberndorfer joined ÉEM in 2008 to complement the company’s sustainability and ecological business portfolios.  She holds a Master’s of Science in Biology, and her professional training is as a plant ecologist and field botanist.

Prior to joining ÉEM, Erica held plant diversity research and teaching positions at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, NS.  She has conducted species-at-risk research with the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre and the Royal Botanical Gardens, and is experienced in ecological land classification and conservation management planning.  She has work experience in the green roof industry and has a keen interest in urban ecology.  She speaks English, French and conversational German.

At ÉEM, Erica works at mainstreaming biodiversity and sustainability strategies into whole business planning for the private and public sector. She is currently working on biodiversity strategies, including a synthesis of ecological context, biological research, regional risks to biodiversity, and a gap analysis of company activities relative to relevant biodiversity standards.  She was also a key strategist in developing the Tennis Canada Rogers Cup Green Plan.

Amal

Amal El-Nahas, M.Sc.

Amal El-Nahas joined ÉEM in 2008, bringing her expertise in environmental protection, integrated management systems (environment, health & safety, and quality) and knowledge of green building standards.

Prior to joining ÉEM, Amal participated in the implementation of the Go Green environmental program for green buildings at a Montreal hospital and contributed to the hospital's improvement of biomedical waste management. Amal previously worked in Lebanon on an ozone-depleting substance elimination project as part of the Montreal Protocol, and on a project for eliminating dioxin and furan emissions as part of the Stockholm Convention. Furthermore, Amal has considerable experience in quality assurance in the pharmaceutical sector.

With graduate degrees in both chemistry and environmental auditing, her responsibilities at ÉEM include participating in environmental, health & safety and quality assurance audits and management system implementation. She also helps ÉEM's clients prepare mandatory emission reports in accordance with federal and provincial legislation. Furthermore, she is involved with green building practices and green events management.

Veronique

Véronique Tousignant, M.A.

Véronique joined ÉEM in 2008. She holds a Masterʼs Degree in Project Management, a Bachelorʼs Degree in International Law and Relations, and is currently working towards a graduate diploma in Environmental Impact Assessment.


Véroniqueʼs previous work experience includes the implementation and maintenance of environmental and quality management systems, in various industrial sectors including structural steel and prefabricated concrete manufacturing, printing and recycling. Ms. Tousignant is well versed in EHSQ management systems having conducted numerous management system, gap analysis and legal compliance audits. Veronique holds ISO 9001:2000 lead auditor status and FSC chain of custody lead auditor status.


In addition, having completed the ISO 14064-1 Essentials: Greenhouse Gas Inventories training offered by the CSA, Véronique has undertaken numerous greenhouse gas inventory reports for companies in the service industry, printing and light manufacturing sector.

Katherine Latimer, B.A. 

As office manager since 2001, Katherine has provided the project performance tracking and administrative underpinning of the business.  She is the main contact for all administrative and accountability issues. She ensures the day-to-day running of ÉEM by maintaining continuous contact with our many clients and suppliers.

Mariela Tovar, Ph.D.

Mariela has twenty years experience in education specializing in the design and evaluation of educational programs, adult education and the application of learning technologies.  She has worked in diverse sectors and cultural environments, including Quebec, Italy, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Venezuela.  Her expertise has been sought for teaching improvement in academia, training applied to corporate EHS assurance, to human rights organizations and the development of web-based communication and training technologies for indigenous peoples.  

Previously an Associate Professor in the Graduate Programme in Educational Technology at Concordia University and currently an Educational Development Specialist in the Teaching and Learning Services unit of McGill University, she has provided training services within universities and to NGOs.  At ÉEM, since 1998 she has assisted industrial corporations and First Nations clients, and is retained to direct or assist on the social performance dimension of Sustainability projects.

John David Phyper, M.B.A., M.A.Sc., P.Eng.

John has been an EEM associate for more than twenty years.  In 2009, he and Paul MacLean published Good to Green - Managing Business Risks and Opportunities in the Age of Environmental Awareness.

John is President of P&A - Business Advisory Services Inc., a management consultancy that provides business advice (e.g., sales/marketing, financing, software development) to small-medium clean-tech companies and management and IT consulting services (e.g., SD, CSR, PLM & supply chain management) to multinational organizations. 

John has a wealth of experience in managing high growth companies in the environmental sector, as well as consulting to a broad spectrum of industry and government agencies on environmental and IT issues.

Ron Nielsen, P. Eng., PBAS

Ron joined the EEM team as a Senior Associate in September of 2008.  Ron is presently Executive in Residence at the Dalhousie University Faculty of Management, leading the development of the new International Centre for Business Innovation and Sustainability.  Prior to joining Dalhousie, Ron was Director of Sustainability and Strategic Partnerships at Rio Tinto Alcan, working to implement sustainability initiatives across the Company's business units. A former Director of the Air Programme for Pollution Probe, Ron is active with a number of organizations including World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Canadian Water Network and the Canadian Technical Committee for the ISO Climate Change Standard.  Ron is also an accredited partnership broker (PBAS) through the Overseas Development Institute and International Business Leaders' Forum.


Eric Muller, Ph.D.


Eric has thirty-five years of environmental consulting experience, in Canada and other countries. He is a biologist and his speciality is impact assessment on biological systems. He has taught in various universities in Canada and the US. He has been an expert witness before the National Energy Board, the Ontario Energy Board, the Joint Board (under the Ontario Consolidated Hearings Act), and the Ontario Municipal Board. Eric is fluent in French and English and is founder and president of TERRA Geographical Studies Inc., a firm specializing in environmental studies since 1979.
 
Eric’s fields of expertise includes issues related to: the Canadian Arctic and Boreal regions; uranium mining and nuclear facilities; linear facilities (e.g., pipelines, roads) including route selection studies; waste disposal facilities; and regional geographical and planning studies.


 

Jonathan Brun, Jr. Eng.

Jonathan Brun joined ÉEM in 2006. He has a metallurgical engineering background with extensive international experience in Europe, Canada and China. He speaks French, English, basic Italian and basic Mandarin Chinese.
 

Though his background is in the steel industry, he has worked on engineering projects, sales, environmental regulations and contract negotiations.

Yves Faguy, LLB 

Yves Faguy joined ÉEM in 2005.  He is a lawyer with a communications background and an interest in sustainable development.  Fluently bilingual, he has worked to increase awareness about sustainable development in Canadian communities, namely by working on a communication strategy for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and CH2M HILL Canada Limited Sustainable Community Awards. He has also authored numerous environmental, business and legal affairs articles for publication and has served as senior editor for National, a legal publication.


Before joining ÉEM, Yves worked at a Montreal law firm where he acted as counsel for clients in multi-party transactions involving environmental liability.

Anne-Marie Boulay, Jr. Eng. 

Anne-Marie was recruited in 2007 while she was working on an international development project in micro-finance and business training in Peru, and later, a conservation project in the Philippines. Prior to her travels, she had been with the environmental team of the General Motors facilities in Ontario, implementing efficiency improvement strategies.

She is a holder of a Chemical Engineering degree from McGill University and an environmental engineering minor obtained through her exchange program at the Université de Montpellier II in France. 

In addition to water treatment research experience gained at MGill, Anne-Marie is bringing engineering know-how to EHS processes at plants of ÉEM's industrial clients in Québec.

 Anne-Marie is fluent in French, English and Spanish.
